The Link Between Dentures and Cognitive Health
A recent study reveals that using dentures may help older adults prevent cognitive decline associated with tooth loss. The research emphasizes that dentures contribute not only to oral health but also to preserving mental function in the elderly.
A Large-Scale Study in China
The study analyzed over 27,700 Chinese adults aged 65 and above between 2008 and 2018. Researchers found that denture users had higher baseline cognitive performance and experienced slower cognitive decline compared to non-users.
Different Impacts on Various Groups
Among individuals with natural teeth, denture use was linked to improved cognitive performance and reduced decline. However, in completely edentulous individuals, dentures only enhanced initial cognitive performance but did not slow the rate of decline over time.
The study highlights the critical role of prosthodontic rehabilitation, such as denture use, in maintaining cognitive health in older adults. These findings underscore the importance of dental care in preventing cognitive issues, though further research is needed to confirm causality.
