Flossing: A Bridge to Oral, Heart, and Brain Health

Did you know that a simple habit like flossing can have a significant impact on your heart and brain health? A study presented at the 2025 International Stroke Conference reveals that flossing at least once a week reduces the risk of stroke and irregular heartbeats (AFib).

The study examined over 6,000 participants, showing that flossing was linked to a 22% lower risk of ischemic stroke and a 44% lower risk of cardioembolic stroke (caused by heart-related blood clots). Additionally, the risk of atrial fibrillation (AFib) was reduced by 12%. Surprisingly, this benefit was observed independently of regular brushing and dentist visits!

Researchers believe this connection is due to reduced inflammation and oral infections, which can help prevent artery hardening and blood clot formation. Furthermore, people who floss regularly are less likely to develop tooth decay and gum disease, which also play a crucial role in overall health.

With over 12 million Americans projected to have AFib by 2030, these findings suggest that maintaining oral hygiene could be a simple and cost-effective way to prevent serious heart and brain diseases. Maybe it's time to make flossing a daily habit!
