Trasforming Dental Education: The Role of VR-Haptics in Shaping Future

Over the past decade, VR-haptic technology has emerged as a promising innovation in dental education. By combining virtual reality with haptic feedback, this technology allows students to practice hand skills in a safe, controlled environment, making it an excellent complement to traditional teaching methods.

A recent study led by the University of Eastern Finland reviewed 42 significant articles and educator surveys, highlighting the practical applications of VR-haptics. It revealed that while the technology holds significant potential, more validation and research are required to establish its use as a primary training tool.

One key benefit of VR-haptics is its ability to offer personalized training and detailed feedback to students, which enhances their engagement and accelerates skill acquisition. Moreover, the technology can address challenges in preclinical and clinical training by simulating real-world scenarios.

Although VR-haptics has demonstrated promising outcomes in skill transfer to real-world applications, it is not yet fully integrated into dental curricula. The technology needs more widespread validation before it can replace or significantly supplement traditional learning methods.

As the technology evolves, VR-haptics may revolutionize dental education, becoming a critical tool for both training and assessing students and professionals. Its potential to reshape the way we learn and practice dentistry makes it an exciting development for the future.
