Photo-Activated/Light-Activated Oral Disinfection Device

The FotoSan is a Danish product that works on the basis of photoactivated disinfection (PAD). PAD is a successful method in periodontological treatments. Studies show that photodynamic or light-activated disinfection has been researched and successfully carried out for decades. In the treatment of periodontitis, among other things, treatment with FotoSan is also less painful and more effective than traditional therapy, such as antibiotic treatment.

Photoactivated disinfection is a procedure that works with a light-sensitive liquid toluidine blue O (TBO) and a high energy red LED light. TBO has the unique property of attaching to the cell wall and other elementary cell structures of microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi, etc.). When TBO is illuminated with red light (630 nm), TBO will absorb the energy of the light and then transfer it to the oxygen present. As a result, the oxygen is split into oxygen radicals. Oxygen radicals break down the cell wall and DNA/RNA, destroying pathogenic microorganisms. At the same time, the polysaccharides in the extracellular matrix of the biofilm are also broken down by oxygen radicals.  As a result, microorganisms in hard-to-reach places are also eliminated. The persistent paropathogens (e.g. P. gingivalis and A. actinomycetemcomitans) are sensitive to this method of disinfection.

PAD is successfully applied as an adjunct treatment to scaling and root planing.  An important advantage is that it is a safer, more patient-friendly and more effective (up to 99.7%) method than the use of antibiotics and chlorhexidine .

After using the FotoSan, you will see a significant improvement in pocket depth, swelling and bleeding in the short term. In addition, the number of bacteria is also drastically reduced. Up to and including 12 weeks after treatment, you will still see improvement in results.

Photoactivated disinfection can be used for the following indications: gingivitis, periodontitis, pericoronitis, peri-implantitis, canker sores, candidiasis. In addition to its applications in periodontology, PAD can also be used for caries and endodontics.

All microorganisms are sensitive to this method, only the degree of sensitivity differs.
